About Cornel

The Scout Association purchased the estate in 1969 and converted the buildings into two self contained bunkhouses - Ty Cornel - the House and Cornel fach - the Annex. Previously the land and buildings had been a hill farm for hundreds of years.

A DVD is available on request to educational institutions, youth organisations and Scout groups. Please indicate if you would like one when making initial enquiries.

Cornel operates - as do many Scout centres - on a basis of responsibility and trust. It's important to us that we continue to enjoy the excellent relations we have with the local farming community and therefore it's essential that common sense and good supervision is used whenever at Cornel. This, in particular, relates to the use of radios, whose sound can travel for miles in the still air on summer evenings. At Cornel, we feel that the sounds of the brooks and streams, as they gurgle and splash their ways into the lake, mingling with the calls of the many wild birds in the area are infinitely preferable to the noise of Radio 1 and we'd ask that leaders encourage their Scouts to listen to the countryside instead of the same noise they can hear at home.

The maintenance and improvements at Cornel are done mainly by the Cornel Service team and the Cornel Explorer Unit, both of which are open to members from across the UK. If you'd like to make a contribution, then get in touch!

Our water supplies come from a stream across the road and above the house, from where it is filtered, purified and sterilized. In summer, this stream can run low, so conservation of supplies is the name of the game.

Facilities include showers, toilets, pioneering poles' loan, pay telephone, indoor accommodation in two buildings for a total of 30 people, streams and lake access to Llyn Gerionedd, a large lake easily accessible by road and which a forested walk joins to Cornel. Gerionedd can be used for all boating activities and regular users normally combine the walk through the hilly forest with a day's boating.
