Welcome to Cornel

Mountain access from a safe (Terrain Zero) environment

Cornel is a large camp site site on the banks of Lake Crafnant in Snowdonia, North Wales. In addition to 25 acres of camping grounds it comprises a fully equipped campers block, with toilets, showers and a drying room plus a converted farmhouse divided into two discrete units which sleeps a total of 30 in five bunkrooms. Each unit has its own purpose built modern kitchen, showers, and comfortable lounge, (the larger also has a drying room) making it the ideal base for groups wishing to spend time in a safe and beautiful environment yet within walking distance of the Carneddau peaks.

Cornel is owned and operated by the Welsh Scout Council and the large house - known as Ty Cornel -and the smaller Annex (Cornel fach) are available for hire to groups and organisations of young people and to industry, schools, D of E award organisers and Universities. Scouts, D of E award groups and other youth organisations also frequently use Cornel for camping during their expeditions.

Situated at 200m at the head of a valley on the shores of Llyn Crafnant, Cornel Scout Centre lies amid sixty acres of land and offers camping normally between April & September (with its own toilets, showers & dry shelter facilities) and indoor accommodation available all year round. In 2003, the smaller of the two buildings (on the left on the picture below) was demolished and completely rebuilt to current standards, and now sleeps 10 on two floors and is completely self - contained.

The nearest village is Trefriw, through which you have to drive to approach the Centre. The road approach from Trefriw starts with a very steep climb and then gently climbs along a narrow road through woodland. Neither caravans nor coaches are allowed at Comel.

The Centre is an ideal base for exploring the Carneddau range of mountains, to the West & gentler country to the East & South in this part of the Snowdonia National park. Of particular interest to Scout Leaders is that the hills and land to the South and East of the house fall within the Terrain Zero classification (POR 9.26) , which enables any Scout group to conduct activities without having to possess any high level authorisations and even offers scope for Beaver activities. For more relaxing days out groups can visit Conwy, and its castle, and the seaside towns of Llandudno and Colwyn Bay which are only a few miles down the valley, whilst Llandudno Junction sports a multi screen cinema and a giant Tesco.

Bookings are welcome from any groups with an interest in the splendid isolation and magnificent scenery of the Snowdonia National park. We currently have users from Youth organisations, charities, Mountain training groups, Corporate groups, Universities, Colleges and schools, and would welcome others.
